Overview

What is Snapdrop?

Snapdrop is a web application for local file sharing inspired by Apple's AirDrop, but designed to work on all devices and all operating systems, simply from a browser. No installation, no account : open the page on two devices on the same network and they detect each other automatically.

Transfers are performed peer-to-peer via WebRTC, end-to-end encrypted: files go directly from one device to another without passing through or being stored on a server. You can send documents, photos, videos, or simple text messages with a single click.

Lightweight and fully open source, Snapdrop is ideal for replacing USB drives or emailing yourself at the office or at home. Hosted as a private instance by DINAO, it becomes a controlled internal sharing tool, without dependence on a public service.

FAQ

You might be wondering…

Do my files pass through a server?

No. Snapdrop establishes a direct (peer-to-peer) connection between your devices. The server only serves to connect them; it does not receive or store your files.

Do I need to install an application?

No. Everything works in the browser, on PC, Mac, smartphone, and tablet. Just open the page of your instance.

Do my devices need to be on the same network?

For the fastest local sharing, yes. Your DINAO instance can also allow remote exchanges depending on the chosen configuration.

Why a private instance instead of the public service?

A dedicated instance hosted in France ensures that your exchanges remain within your perimeter, without depending on an external shared service.

What file size can I send?

Snapdrop does not impose a strict format limit. For very large transfers, prioritize devices on the same network for better performance.
