What is MongoDB 4?

MongoDB 4 refers to the 4.x branch of the MongoDB document-based (NoSQL) database, organized around a document model in JSON-like format (BSON). Rather than rigid tables and rows, MongoDB groups data into flexible documents, facilitating schema evolution and modeling of complex structures.

The 4.x series introduced significant improvements: multi-document transactions (from version 4.0, extended to sharded clusters in 4.2), enhancements to the WiredTiger engine, aggregation pipeline and indexes. It retains replication via replica sets and horizontal partitioning (sharding) for scalability.

This version remains relevant for applications designed for the 4.x branch that prioritize stability and compatibility without immediate migration. Deployable on Linux and in containers, it integrates into a modern architecture while remaining fully controlled on your own infrastructure, with a possible upgrade path when needed.

Why choose MongoDB 4 over a more recent version?

The 4.x branch remains very widespread and many applications explicitly require it. Keeping it avoids forced migration while benefiting from multi-document transactions (4.0+) and a replica set. DINAO can also guide you toward a higher version when the time comes.

Is this an alternative to MongoDB Atlas?

Yes. You get a managed MongoDB equivalent, but hosted in France by DINAO, with no dependency on Atlas's US cloud. Your data remains sovereign.

Where are the data hosted?

On DINAO's infrastructure in France, in one of the available data centers. Your documents never leave the territory and remain subject to French and European law.

Are technical skills required?

To use the database, a connection string and an official driver are sufficient. DINAO handles installation, the replica set, backups and security. Your developers retain full access.

How do backups and restoration work?

Daily encrypted backups (snapshots or mongodump) are retained for X days. Restoring a collection or the entire cluster is done upon request.
