Overview

What is Mastodon?

Mastodon is a free and open source social network server based on the ActivityPub standard. It is a platform for federated microblogging: users operate on interconnected servers rather than on a single centralized platform. Your instance is part of the Fediverse and interoperates with other Mastodon instances and any ActivityPub-compatible software.

You will find chronological real-time feeds with live notifications, media attachments (images, looping videos), and comprehensive security and moderation tools: private posts, account locking, content filtering, mute, block, and reports. REST and Streaming APIs power a rich ecosystem of third-party applications.

Built in Ruby on Rails (backend) and React (frontend), with a streaming API in Node.js, Mastodon relies on PostgreSQL, Redis, and Sidekiq. It deploys via Docker and uses OAuth2 for authentication. AGPLv3 license.
