What is Thumbor?
Thumbor is an open-source on-demand image processing service, originally created by globo.com. It works as an HTTP server: you request an image via a URL containing the desired parameters (dimensions, cropping, filters) and it returns the transformed visual, then caches it.
Its most appreciated feature is smart cropping: Thumbor uses face detection and interest point algorithms to preserve the essential parts of an image during resizing, even for formats very different from the original.
It supports numerous storage sources and destinations (file, HTTP, Redis, S3…), a chained filter system, conversion to modern formats (WebP, AVIF), signed URLs for security, and simple Docker deployment. It's the ideal tool for serving optimized images to every device without pre-generating dozens of variants.

How is an image generated?
Everything is controlled via the URL: you specify the size, cropping, or desired filters, and Thumbor produces the image on the fly, then caches it for subsequent requests.
Is cropping really automatic?
Yes. Thumbor detects faces and important areas of the image to preserve the essentials, even when switching to a square or banner format.
Can transformations be protected?
Yes. URLs can be signed (HMAC) to prevent third parties from generating unauthorized variants of your images.
Where are images stored?
On DINAO's infrastructure in France, or on your S3 object storage depending on the plan. Your media never leaves the territory.
Can I change plans or export my data?
Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade at any time, and your original images and configuration remain exportable.
