What is withoutbg?
withoutbg is an open source (Apache-2.0) background removal toolkit powered by artificial intelligence. It allows you to automatically mat your photos — products, portraits, visuals — and obtain a transparent PNG image in seconds, with clean edge rendering.
Its main advantage is fully local processing: once the container is deployed, the application works offline, without an API key or outbound connection. Your images stay on your network, making it a relevant choice for confidential processing or large volumes that you do not wish to pay per image with a cloud service.
withoutbg offers a web interface with drag-and-drop functionality for immediate use, as well as a CLI and API to integrate matting into automated workflows. Deployed as a container on your DINAO instance, it comes with HTTPS, backups, and continuous monitoring.

This application uses AI
The container hosts the application, not the AI engine (which requires dedicated GPUs) : inference is handled externally, with your own provider key. Prioritize a sovereign engine — Mistral AI, NumSpot, Scaleway, or OVHcloud AI Endpoints (France, GDPR) ; an international provider (OpenAI, Anthropic…) only if a specific capability requires it. Inference subscriptions are not included in hosting.

Are my images sent to a third-party service?
No. Once deployed, withoutbg runs entirely locally on your instance hosted in France. No images are transmitted externally, and no API key is required.
What is the quality of the matting?
withoutbg relies on open source AI models dedicated to background removal, which produce clean matting, even on complex edges, with transparent PNG output.
Can I process images in batches?
Yes. In addition to the drag-and-drop web interface, withoutbg offers a CLI and API that allow you to automate the matting of large volumes of images.
Where are the images processed?
On DINAO infrastructure in France, in one of the available data centers. Your visuals never leave the territory.
Is a GPU required?
No, withoutbg runs on CPU. For very large volumes, a GPU can be added as an option to speed up processing.
