Overview

What is SeaweedFS?

SeaweedFS is a distributed object and file storage system, open source, designed to efficiently store and serve both billions of small files and large objects. Where traditional object storage struggles with small files, SeaweedFS shines thanks to an architecture inspired by Facebook's Haystack paper, offering very low latency.

It exposes an S3-compatible API, allowing you to immediately connect your existing applications, SDKs, and tools (backups, media, data lake) without rewriting. A Filer adds a file layer with POSIX access (FUSE mount), WebDAV, and HTTP, as well as versioning, TTLs, and encryption.

Designed for scale and resilience, SeaweedFS manages volume replication, tiering (hot/cold storage, cloud), and deploys as a multi-node fault-tolerant cluster. It is a sovereign and cost-effective alternative to hyperscaler object storage services.

FAQ

You might be wondering…

Is SeaweedFS really compatible with my existing S3 tools?

Yes. SeaweedFS exposes a standard S3 API: AWS SDKs, rclone, MinIO Client, Veeam, Restic, and most backup tools work by simply changing the endpoint and keys.

Why not use AWS S3 or a hyperscaler directly?

For sovereignty and cost: your data stays in France under European jurisdiction, and you avoid request-based and egress billing that makes hyperscalers unpredictable in usage.

Where is the data hosted?

On DINAO infrastructure in France, in one of the available datacenters. Your objects never leave the territory.

How do you ensure file durability?

Depending on the tier, SeaweedFS replicates volumes (and the multi-node cluster tolerates the loss of a node). Encrypted backups complement protection with configurable retention.

Can I increase capacity later?

Yes. Capacity is scalable, and you can upgrade from tier to tier at any time. Your data remains exportable — no proprietary lock-in.
