Your location history, truly private
The geolocation backend powered by OwnTracks Recorder, installed and maintained by DINAO. Store and visualize positions published by the OwnTracks app — on your French servers, not with Google.
What is OwnTracks Recorder?
OwnTracks Recorder is the backend that stores and provides access to location data published by OwnTracks applications. The server consumes the position from a MQTT broker or via an HTTP POST request, with the mobile app publishing its position periodically or on optional triggers (geofence entry/exit, significant position change, manual update).
OwnTracks allows you to track your own position, build a private location history, or share it with family and friends. It is an open source project based on open protocols, ensuring your data remains secure and private. The included web frontend (Vue.js) displays a table of the latest positions and a live map updated via WebSocket, as well as point or trace maps produced in GeoJSON.
Lightweight, the Recorder easily supports about a dozen friends on a small server. Deployed in a dedicated container — with the MQTT broker and map frontend set up by DINAO — it is hosted in France, monitored, backed up, and updated by us.

Technical details
You might be wondering…
Do my positions go to Google or Apple?
No. That is precisely the purpose of OwnTracks: the app publishes your positions to your own Recorder hosted in France. You build a strictly private location history.
How does the app send my position?
The OwnTracks app (iOS/Android) publishes its position via MQTT or HTTP, periodically or triggered (entry/exit of zone, significant change, manual update). The Recorder stores it.
Can I share my position with my family?
Yes. OwnTracks is designed for controlled sharing among close contacts: everyone publishes to the same Recorder, and you view the positions of your circle on a shared map.
Is there a map to view the traces?
Yes. The Recorder provides a table of the latest positions and a live map updated in real time (WebSocket), with points and traces in GeoJSON format. The web frontend is included.
Where are the data hosted?
On the DINAO infrastructure in France, in one of the available data centers. Your movements do not leave the territory.
