Your private NotebookLM, hosted in France
Open Notebook is the open-source alternative to Google NotebookLM: chat with your documents, generate podcasts, and perform vector search. Installed by DINAO, your sources stay on our French servers.
What is Open Notebook?
Open Notebook is the open-source answer to Google NotebookLM. It replicates its core use cases — chatting with your documents, getting summaries grounded in your sources, generating podcasts — and goes further by giving you full control over the model and hosting.
The tool supports over 18 AI providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, Groq, xAI, DeepSeek…), including local models via Ollama or LM Studio. It generates podcasts with up to four voices, offers comprehensive vector search, and exposes a REST API for integration with your systems.
Under the hood, Open Notebook relies on SurrealDB for relational and vector storage, and deploys via Docker Compose. It is the ideal alternative for leveraging documentary AI while keeping your sources confidential, on infrastructure managed by DINAO.

This application uses AI
The container hosts the application, not the AI engine (which requires dedicated GPUs) : inference is handled externally, with your own provider key. Prioritize a sovereign engine — Mistral AI, NumSpot, Scaleway, or OVHcloud AI Endpoints (France, GDPR) ; an international provider (OpenAI, Anthropic…) only if a specific capability requires it. Inference subscriptions are not included in hosting.
Technical details
You might be wondering…
How is it an alternative to NotebookLM?
Open Notebook replicates the key features of Google NotebookLM — chatting with sources, getting summaries, generating podcasts — but in open source and self-hosted, with the choice of model (including local) and a REST API.
Do my documents go to Google or OpenAI?
In local mode (model served on your instance), no: your sources stay in France. If you connect an external API, only the content transmitted to that provider leaves — you keep control over the choice.
What source formats can I import?
PDFs, text files, web content, and videos. Open Notebook indexes your sources for vector search and grounds its answers with citations.
How do podcasts work?
From your documents, Open Notebook generates an audio podcast with up to four speakers, ideal for reviewing or distributing a summary to your team.
Can I change plans or export my data?
Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade at any time, and your data remains exportable — no proprietary lock-in.
