Overview

What is Open Humans?

Open Humans is an open-source platform for participatory research and personal data exploration, originally operated by the Open Humans Foundation. It is participant-centered : each individual can aggregate their own data (genetic, physical activity, sensors, medical data…), explore it, and freely choose to share it with research projects.

The core of the model relies on granular and revocable consent : the participant decides, project by project, who accesses which data. This transparent and ethical approach makes it a reference tool for studies where participant trust is essential. Jupyter notebooks also allow for interactive data exploration.

Built in Python / Django (MIT license), the platform exposes an OAuth2 API and dedicated packages (open-humans-api, django-open-humans) to connect projects and data sources. Hosted by DINAO in France, it meets the ethical and GDPR requirements of research institutions.

FAQ

You might be wondering…

What is Open Humans for?

Open Humans is a participatory research platform: it allows individuals to aggregate their own personal data, explore it, and choose to share it with research projects, while retaining control. It is the ideal tool for participant-centered studies.

Who controls participants' data?

The participant, always. Each member decides which data they connect and with which projects they share it, with explicit and revocable consent at any time. The platform materializes this transparency.

Can I explore data with analysis tools?

Yes. Open Humans offers Jupyter notebooks that allow participants and researchers to explore personal data in an interactive environment, respecting the consents granted.

How do I connect my own research projects?

Open Humans exposes an OAuth2 API and Python packages (open-humans-api, django-open-humans). Your projects register, request access to the desired data, and only access it with participants' authorization.

Where is the data hosted?

On DINAO infrastructure in France, in one of the available datacenters. Personal and research data do not leave the territory, in compliance with GDPR.
