Overview

What is NetBird Client?

NetBird is an open-source, fully self-hostable WireGuard mesh VPN, with no mandatory cloud dependency. Comparable to Tailscale, it stands out because the entire infrastructure — management server, signal server, and STUN/TURN servers — can run on your own hosting, without an external proprietary coordinator.

NetBird establishes a peer-to-peer mesh: direct WireGuard tunnels between devices, with no central bottleneck, no port forwarding, no fixed IP, and no manual key exchange. It adds a zero-trust model where no machine has network access by default, group-based access policies, SSO integration (Keycloak, Azure AD…), and a full audit log.

The self-hosted version is free (license BSD-3) and well-documented. NetBird now integrates a reverse-proxy allowing you to expose services (TCP, UDP, TLS) without third-party edge equipment — an end-to-end sovereign network building block.

FAQ

You might be wondering…

What is NetBird used for?

NetBird creates a private mesh network between your servers, workstations, and devices via WireGuard. Each machine runs the NetBird client and communicates peer-to-peer, as if they were on the same local network, wherever they are.

How is it different from solutions like Tailscale?

NetBird is fully self-hostable: management, signal, and relay servers run on DINAO's infrastructure in France. You do not depend on any external proprietary cloud coordinator.

How does zero-trust work?

No device gets network access by default when it joins. Group-based rules explicitly define who can reach what, with SSO/OIDC authentication and a full audit log.

Do I need to open ports or configure IPs?

No. NetBird establishes tunnels without port forwarding, fixed IPs, or manual key exchange. Simply install the client on each device for it to join the network.

Can I scale my network?

Yes. You can scale up or down based on the number of devices, and the configuration remains exportable — no vendor lock-in, as NetBird is open source (BSD-3 license).
