Your film journal, hosted in France
The Letterboxd of your film library powered by Movary, installed and maintained by DINAO. Your viewing history and notes remain on our French servers — no ads or tracking.
What is Movary?
Movary is a self-hosted web application that serves as a central hub to track, rate, and explore your film viewing history. Designed as a sovereign alternative to Letterboxd or Trakt, it allows you to build your own film enthusiast journal: record every film watched, assign a rating, and keep all this history on your own infrastructure, without third-party ads or tracking.
Its key strength lies in the detailed statistics generated from the history: analysis by actor, director, genre, language, or year, a customizable dashboard, and highlighting of viewing habits. Metadata (posters, cast, genres, durations) is fetched from TheMovieDB and IMDb, then stored locally.
Movary shines through its integrations. For import/export, it syncs with Trakt, Letterboxd, and Netflix. For automatic tracking (scrobbling), it connects to media servers Plex, Jellyfin, Emby, and Kodi: a film launched on any of them is automatically marked as watched. It also offers cross-posting to Mastodon.
Technically, Movary is a PHP (PHP-FPM) application with a Twig template engine, using a MySQL / MariaDB database, deployed via Docker. Lightweight, it can also be installed as a mobile app via PWA. Note: the project is still described as « experimental but usable » before its 1.0 release.

Technical details
You might be wondering…
Does Movary replace Letterboxd or Trakt?
Yes, it is a self-hosted alternative: viewing journal, ratings, and statistics, but on your own infrastructure. Import from Letterboxd, Trakt, and Netflix is planned to facilitate migration.
Do I need an API key to run it?
Yes. A TheMovieDB (TMDB) key is highly recommended: without it, many metadata retrieval functions (posters, cast, genres) do not work. DINAO assists you with its configuration.
Can I track my films automatically?
Yes. Via scrobbling, a film launched on Plex, Jellyfin, Emby, or Kodi is automatically marked as watched in Movary — without any manual entry.
Can multiple people use it?
Yes. Movary supports multiple user accounts, allowing family or shared use on a single instance. It can also be installed as a mobile app via PWA.
Is my data private?
Yes. Your history and notes remain on your instance, on our French servers, without third-party ads or tracking, with native GDPR compliance.
