What is LibrePhotos?
LibrePhotos is an open-source self-hosted photo management service, positioned as a free alternative to Google Photos. It combines a modern web gallery with visual intelligence features: face recognition and classification, object and scene detection, and semantic image search.
The application handles RAW files and videos, offers a chronological view (timeline), and automatically generates albums by events and locations. The multi-user mode allows sharing a media library while isolating access.
Technically, LibrePhotos relies on Django and PostgreSQL on the server side, a React interface, and embedded machine learning models for vision (facial recognition, classification, captioning). Since these processes are memory-intensive, DINAO sizes the container — typically requiring more RAM — based on the size of your collection.

Are my photos analyzed by Google or a third party?
No. All analysis (faces, objects, search) runs locally on your instance hosted in France. Your photos are never sent to Google or any external service.
Is facial recognition really private?
Yes. The vision models run on your dedicated server; faces and indexing remain in your database. Nothing is shared, in compliance with GDPR.
What formats are supported?
Common photo formats, RAW files, and videos. LibrePhotos generates thumbnails, the timeline, and automatic albums.
Why does LibrePhotos require more RAM?
AI functions (facial recognition, object detection, captioning) are memory-intensive. We size your container accordingly: expect more RAM as your collection grows.
Can I retrieve my photos at any time?
Yes. Your original files remain accessible and exportable — no proprietary lock-in.
