What is Headscale?

Headscale is an open-source and self-hostable implementation of the Tailscale coordination server. It allows you to build your own WireGuard mesh network, in which all your machines — servers, workstations, mobiles, remote sites — connect directly to each other, in an encrypted and secure manner.

Where Tailscale entrusts the control plane to its cloud, Headscale brings it back to you: keys, identities, and access policies are managed on your server. You keep the official Tailscale clients on all platforms, simply pointed to your Headscale instance, with MagicDNS, declarative ACLs, subnet routers, and exit nodes.

Hosted by DINAO in France, Headscale becomes a sovereign mesh VPN: your network metadata no longer depends on a foreign third-party service, while retaining the ease of use that made Tailscale successful.

Is Headscale compatible with Tailscale apps?

Yes. Headscale is an open-source reimplementation of the Tailscale coordination server. You use the official Tailscale clients (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android), simply pointed to your DINAO Headscale server.

How is this more sovereign than Tailscale?

With Tailscale, the control plane (keys, identities, metadata) is hosted by the US vendor. With Headscale managed by DINAO, this server is hosted in France and under your control.

Does my traffic go through your servers?

No, except in fallback cases. Traffic is encrypted via WireGuard and established peer-to-peer between your machines. Headscale only coordinates the connection; it does not see the content of your exchanges.

Can I connect multiple remote sites?

Yes. Thanks to subnet routers and exit nodes, you interconnect offices, datacenters, and remote workstations into a single encrypted private network.

Do I need advanced networking skills?

DINAO handles the installation and initial configuration (ACL, SSO, DNS). Adding a machine then simply involves installing the Tailscale client and enrolling it.
