The spreadsheet that thinks like a database
Grist brings together the simplicity of a spreadsheet and the power of a relational database. Installed and maintained by DINAO, hosted in France — your business data never leaves for a foreign cloud.
What is Grist?
Grist is an open-source relational spreadsheet that combines the familiarity of a spreadsheet with the robustness of a true database. Where a traditional spreadsheet scatters information across independent cells, Grist organizes your data into interconnected tables linked by references, ensuring consistency and integrity.
Its key strength lies in its Python-based formulas, which go far beyond traditional spreadsheet functions: validations, conditional calculations, business automation. Each dataset can be displayed as a grid, card, or calendar, and structured into interactive dashboards.
Designed for teamwork, Grist offers fine-grained access control per document and row, a full REST API, webhooks, Excel and CSV import/export, and a self-hostable Docker deployment. It is a sovereign alternative to the American tech giants' cloud spreadsheets.

Technical details
You might be wondering…
How does Grist differ from Excel or Google Sheets?
Grist adds the relational layer of a database: your tables are linked, data is entered only once, and you write real Python formulas. You keep the ease of a spreadsheet without its limitations.
Is my data truly private?
Yes. Your Grist instance is hosted on DINAO's infrastructure in France. Your documents, sheets, and history remain private and are never shared with third parties.
Can I import my existing files?
Yes. Grist imports your CSV and Excel files, and you can export at any time. No proprietary lock-in.
Do I need technical skills?
Not for everyday use: the interface resembles a spreadsheet. Python formulas and the API are there to go further, but they are not mandatory. DINAO handles installation and maintenance.
Can I change plans or export my data?
Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade at any time, and your data remains exportable — no proprietary lock-in.
