What is Ente?
Ente is an end-to-end encrypted cloud for your photos and videos, designed so you don't have to trust the host. All data is encrypted on your device before upload: on the server, it remains unreadable (a zero-knowledge architecture). It is a private and self-hostable alternative to Google Photos and Apple Photos.
Ente Photos offers a complete gallery: albums, automatic multi-device backup, private or public link sharing, collaborative albums, and family plans. The « Magic Search » semantic search and face recognition rely on ML models (CLIP, face detection) running directly on your device, never on a third-party server. The Ente Auth app adds encrypted management of your 2FA codes.
On the technical side, the « Museum » server is written in Go, mobile apps in Flutter, web and desktop in TypeScript, with a PostgreSQL database and S3-compatible object storage. Everything is 100% open-source, deployable via Docker Compose, and security has been audited by independent firms (Cure53 and others).

You might be wondering…
Can DINAO see my photos?
No. Your photos and videos are encrypted on your device before upload. On the server, they are unreadable, including by DINAO: this is the principle of end-to-end encryption (zero-knowledge).
Does search and face recognition send my photos to an AI?
No. The « Magic Search » semantic search and face grouping run locally on your device. No images are sent to a third-party AI service.
Where is my data hosted?
On DINAO infrastructure in France, in one of the available datacenters. Your files, already encrypted, do not leave the territory.
What happens if I forget my password?
Like any zero-knowledge system, your key derives from your password. Ente provides a recovery key to keep safe: without it or the password, no one can decrypt your data — that's the price of privacy.
Can I change plans or export my photos?
Yes. You can move up or down tiers at any time, and your photos remain exportable via the apps and Ente CLI — no proprietary lock-in.
