Overview

What is Eclipse hawkBit?

Eclipse hawkBit is an open-source, domain-independent back-end solution for deploying software and firmware OTA (over-the-air) updates to connected devices. It targets both constrained edge devices and more powerful gateways and controllers, providing a reference update server based on Spring Boot (Java 21).

hawkBit manages the entire lifecycle: deployment campaigns (progressive rollouts, groups, targets), status tracking for each device, and artifact distribution. Devices and third-party tools communicate with it via standardized HTTP/JSON APIs: the DDI API on the device side, the Management API for administration and integration, and the DMF API (via RabbitMQ) for distributed messaging.

On the security side, hawkBit supports target-specific security tokens, gateway tokens, and integration with an external identity provider (OAuth2 / OpenID Connect), all over TLS. It relies on an SQL database (MySQL/MariaDB or PostgreSQL in production) and RabbitMQ — a stack that DINAO hosts in France, backs up, and monitors for you.

FAQ

You might be wondering…

What is Eclipse hawkBit used for?

To deploy software and firmware OTA (over-the-air) updates to a fleet of connected devices: from constrained edge sensors to gateways, via controlled rollout campaigns with status tracking.

How do my devices connect to it?

Via standardized HTTP/JSON APIs: the DDI API on the device side, the Management API for administration, and the DMF API (RabbitMQ) for distributed messaging. Each target is authenticated with a security token.

Where are my fleet's data hosted?

On DINAO infrastructure in France, in one of the available data centers. The artifacts, inventory, and status of your devices never leave the territory.

Can I control the deployment pace?

Yes. hawkBit manages progressive rollouts by target groups, allowing you to deploy in waves, monitor results, and stop in case of anomalies before affecting the entire fleet.

Can I change my plan or integrate with my IT system?

Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade at any time, hawkBit integrates with your IT system via its APIs and OAuth2/OIDC, and your data remains exportable — no proprietary lock-in.
