Overview

What is ClassQuiz?

ClassQuiz is an interactive quiz platform open-source, designed as a privacy-respecting alternative to Kahoot!. The founding idea is simple: educational software intended for students should be designed « privacy-first ». ClassQuiz allows you to create quizzes and play them remotely in real time, with multiple participants competing simultaneously.

The application primarily targets teachers: the teacher creates a quiz, launches it, and students join to answer live in a competitive atmosphere. Thanks to a simple self-hosting procedure, schools can run their quizzes with no concerns about data collection for their students — a decisive argument in a school and GDPR context.

Technically, the backend relies on FastAPI (Python) and python-socketio for the real-time communication essential to the live mode. The frontend is developed in SvelteKit with TailwindCSS. The infrastructure uses PostgreSQL, Redis, Meilisearch, and Caddy, orchestrated via Docker.

The project is distributed under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, supported notably by NLnet, with translations managed via Weblate. An official hosted version exists, but self-hosting is fully supported — this is the mode DINAO installs and maintains for you, on French soil.
