What is CKAN?

CKAN (Comprehensive Knowledge Archive Network) is the reference open-source platform for creating open data portals and data hubs. It allows you to publish, catalog, store, search, and share datasets via a rich web interface and a complete API. Recognized as a 'Digital Public Good', it powers major public portals worldwide, from data.gov to the Humanitarian Data Exchange.

Each dataset is described by structured metadata, linked to an organization, and accompanied by its resources (files, APIs, links). The full-text and faceted search engine, powered by Apache Solr, makes data immediately findable, while the DataStore offers queryable tabular storage directly via API.

On the operational side, CKAN relies on PostgreSQL, Solr, and Redis, manages organizations, roles, and permissions, and supports harvesting from external sources. A robust foundation, particularly well-suited for local authorities, government agencies, and public actors concerned with transparency and sovereignty.
