Overview

What is Cap?

Cap is the open-source alternative to Loom: a video messaging tool that allows you to record, edit, and share screen videos in seconds. Built with Rust and Tauri, it offers native performance on macOS and Windows while keeping CPU usage low.

Cap offers two capture modes. The instant mode uploads the video during recording, so a shareable link is ready as soon as you stop. The studio mode records in full quality locally, without compression, and allows you to adjust backgrounds, margins, rounded corners, shadows, and cursor effects before sharing.

The tool includes instant share links, comments, transcripts, analytics, team spaces, custom domains, and custom S3 storage. Its web interface, API, database, media server, and object storage can be fully self-hosted via Docker, for total control.

You might be wondering…

Are my videos stored with a third party?

No. Object storage and the media server are hosted on your DINAO instance in France. You can also connect your own S3 storage.

What is the difference between instant and studio modes?

The instant mode generates a shareable link as soon as recording ends. The studio mode records in full quality locally and allows you to edit the output before sharing.

Where is the data hosted?

On DINAO infrastructure in France, in one of the available datacenters. Your videos do not leave the territory.

Do I need technical skills?

No. The capture application installs on your machine and sharing is done via link. DINAO manages hosting, security, and server updates.

Can I change plans or export my videos?

Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade at any time, and your videos remain downloadable and exportable, with no lock-in.
