Overview

What is Backrest?

Backrest is a backup solution accessible via a web interface, built on top of restic. It simplifies backup management through an intuitive interface, accessible locally or remotely — ideal for deployment on a NAS.

It handles repository import, scheduled backups (cron), file browsing, and restoration, as well as pre- and post-backup command hooks and configurable notifications (Discord, Slack…). It is compatible with multiple storage backends: S3, B2, Azure, GCS, local, SFTP, and rclone remotes.

Backrest is designed for those who want a user-friendly backup interface without sacrificing the mature, fast, reliable, and secure capabilities of restic — from beginners seeking simplified management to advanced users who retain command-line access.

FAQ

You might be wondering…

What is Backrest for?

It is a web-based backup interface built on restic: it simplifies the scheduling, monitoring, and restoration of your encrypted backups, without giving up CLI access for advanced users.

Which storage destinations can I use?

S3, B2, Azure, GCS, local storage, SFTP, or any rclone remote. Backups are encrypted and deduplicated by restic.

Where is the data hosted?

The Backrest instance and its metadata are in France on the DINAO infrastructure; you additionally choose the storage destination for your backups.

Do I need technical skills?

No for everyday use: the web interface makes restic accessible. DINAO handles installation and updates; advanced users retain CLI access.

Can I migrate or export my backups?

Yes. Your restic repositories remain standard and portable, readable directly with restic — no proprietary lock-in.
