What is Docspell?
Docspell is an open-source document management system (DMS) designed for individuals, freelancers, and small organizations. Its goal: to organize document piles from scanners, emails, and other sources with minimal effort.
Its architecture is based on two components: a REST server for the interface and a separate task executor that processes files in the background. Upon ingestion, Docspell retrieves, for example, the attachments from your email accounts or monitors a drop folder, applies OCR (Tesseract), and then indexes the content for full-text search. It also automatically detects correspondents, dates, and metadata to suggest relevant filing.
The interface is a modern, responsive SPA web application, accompanied by an Android app for easy mobile uploads and a CLI. You can then organize by tags, folders, organizations, and people. Hosted by DINAO in France, Docspell becomes a sovereign DMS: your often-sensitive documents remain encrypted and isolated on our servers.

The container hosts the application, not the AI engine (which requires dedicated GPUs) : inference is handled externally, with your own provider key. Prioritize a sovereign engine — Mistral AI, NumSpot, Scaleway, or OVHcloud AI Endpoints (France, GDPR) ; an international provider (OpenAI, Anthropic…) only if a specific capability requires it. Inference subscriptions are not included in hosting.

How does Docspell organize my documents?
Docspell runs every document through OCR, then automatically detects correspondents, dates, and other metadata. It suggests a filing structure that you refine with tags, folders, and organizations.
Can it retrieve my documents automatically?
Yes. Docspell can connect to your email accounts to import attachments and monitor drop folders where your scanners deposit files.
Can I search within PDF content?
Yes. Thanks to OCR and full-text indexing, you search within the actual content of documents — an invoice, a name, an amount — not just the filenames.
Where are the data hosted?
On DINAO's infrastructure in France, in one of the available data centers. Your often-sensitive documents never leave the territory.
Can I export my documents?
Yes. Your documents and metadata remain exportable: no proprietary lock-in. You can scale up or down at any time.
