Overview

What is Windmill?

Windmill is an "code-first" orchestration platform for internal tools. It transforms scripts (Python, TypeScript, Go, PHP, Bash, SQL, and over 20 languages) into workflows, APIs, interfaces, and scheduled tasks. DAG-based workflows represent dependencies between steps, and UIs are automatically generated from script parameters.

The tool includes scheduling, auto-generated webhooks, a low-code internal app builder, and a shared PostgreSQL database at the workspace level. It supports AI agent workflow orchestration and integrates with local development (Claude Code, Codex).

Windmill claims no proprietary lock-in: open source and self-hostable, based on common languages, with over 100 ready-to-use integrations. Enterprise features include granular RBAC, SSO, audit logs, and SOC 2 Type II compliance.
