Overview

What is Medusa?

Medusa is an open source composable commerce platform built on Node.js, presented as the alternative to Shopify. It covers all e-commerce functions — product management, cart, orders, payments, discounts, gift cards, inventory, and an admin back-office — while remaining headless to maximize developer freedom.

Its architecture decouples the front-end from business logic: Medusa handles commerce and exposes APIs (REST and GraphQL), while you build the customer experience with your chosen technology (starter kits for Next.js and Gatsby provided). Native multi-region support allows you to localize currencies, taxes, shipping, and payment for each market.

Designed for composability, the platform integrates with headless CMSs, payment and shipping providers, marketing, analytics, and search solutions. Built in TypeScript and supported by a large community, Medusa is adopted by major brands and offers, when hosted by DINAO, an end-to-end sovereign e-commerce solution.

FAQ

You might be wondering…

How does Medusa differ from Shopify?

Medusa is the open source and headless alternative to Shopify: it covers the same e-commerce functions (products, orders, payments, inventory, admin), but you keep the code, data, and freedom to build the front-end of your choice — without per-feature subscriptions or proprietary lock-in.

What does 'headless' mean concretely?

The Medusa back-end handles all commerce logic and exposes an API; you build the front-end with the technology you want (Next.js, Gatsby, mobile…). This gives you total freedom over the customer experience and performance.

Can I sell internationally?

Yes. Medusa natively supports multi-region: you localize currencies, taxes, shipping, and payment methods by market, from a single instance hosted in France.

Where is my store's data hosted?

On your DINAO instance hosted in France, in an isolated container. Your products, orders, and customer data never leave the territory and are not transmitted to any third-party platform.

Do I need a technical team?

Medusa is aimed at projects that want a custom store: a development team builds the front-end and integrations. DINAO handles installation, security, monitoring, and back-end updates.
